Your mind, however, is your absolute first line of defense in 99.9% of scenarios (and we don’t just mean combat or self-defense). It is the filter through which all of your other actions will pass. After all, self-defense in this day and age is rarely cut and dry. You may not only save your life - you may save the life of another, or even save yourself a never-ending legal nightmare over something that wasn’t your fault.

Remember when we talked about the importance of control? This is where mental discipline and tactical training intersect. The most successful survivors, be it in combat, natural disasters, or even everyday disputes, are not necessarily the ones with the best equipment - they are the ones who can consistently maintain control and think strategically. They are also usually the ones who leave those situations with the fewest injuries to themselves and those around them.
This is important, because the difference between merely surviving an encounter and controlling the situation could be the difference between life and death for an innocent bystander, a close friend, a family member, or even your own chance to not be falsely incriminated. Again, look at the world today: innocent people go to jail for this type of thing all the time. Everybody experiences contention. Everyone will have an argument, a disagreement, experience hurt, brokenness, anger, pain, and so on. From the smallest disagreement to the greatest war, many bad situations have quite literally been the result of a single person failing to be proficient with what should be their best tool and most effective weapon.
And in a world that feels increasingly unpredictable, having a clear mind, a calm demeanor, and the ability to make smart decisions under pressure is more valuable than any piece of gear - just as it will allow you to survive and thrive on the battlefield, it will allow you to do the same in your everyday life by not being plagued with the anger, malice, and the stupidity of the world around you.
